Firefox makes the product that gets added on to - it sets the "standards" and the extensions developers have to follow Mozilla's lead - IOW they need to be compatible with Firefox.
It's not that Firefox doesn't support older versions of extensions, but that the extensions don't support the version of Firefox that user's want to install BID into. There are many download extensions available out there, which wouldn't survive in the marketplace if their users had to constantly duke out the bucks for every update that was needed.
Sounds like BID has their head up their a$$ or you misread the information that they gave to you.
